Many different techniques are currently available for the removal of impacted stool from the colon and rectum. Most of these techniques are surgical and involve some combination of colonoscopy, resection, and suture. The surgical removal of impacted stool through the use of colonoscopy has been widely accepted in recent years as a safe alternative to surgery. One such technique involves pushing the impacted stool to one side of the colon with the use of a catheter, leaving the impacted stool adhered to the colon wall on the opposite side. The impacted stool is pushed aside and the colon is flushed with water to remove it. It has been estimated that 25 percent of patients that have undergone the endoscopic approach to removing impacted stool, a large number of these patients, will require one or more follow-up procedures. A new approach to the removal of impacted stool has recently been developed. This technique involves pushing the impacted stool to one side of the colon with the use of an endoscopic grasper or snare. Once the impacted stool has been cleared from the colon, a loop of polyurethane (Teflon.TM.) snare wire is inserted into the colon from the patient's mouth. The loop of wire is looped around the impacted stool and pulled back into the colon through the patient's mouth. This technique involves the introduction of an endoscope with the loop of snare wire disposed inside of the endoscope, which is a relatively new technique. Several shortcomings in the current state of the art techniques for the endoscopic removal of impacted stool have been identified. Because the endoscope is disposable, it must be cleaned thoroughly after use. The current state of the art technique requires that the colon be irrigated with water while the loop of snare wire is being pulled back into the colon.
